Admiral returns offer for DNA to "hang" denialism

Presidential candidate Henrique Gouveia e Melo accepted this Saturday, in Funchal, the offer of a rope with a hangman's knot, given to him by the regional leader of the ADN, but returned it to him immediately afterwards, suggesting that he use it to hang his anti-science ideas.

“I accept, but I’m going to give it back to you. Do you know why? So that you can hang your ideas of denialism, flat-earthism and that there is no climate change here,” he said and went on his way, saying goodbye to the leader of ADN, Miguel Pita, with “good morning and thank you very much.”

Henrique Gouveia e Melo was questioned by the regional coordinator of the National Democratic Alternative at the entrance to the Mercado dos Lavradores, in the center of Funchal, where he was this morning, as part of a visit to the autonomous region, which began on Friday and ends on Sunday on the island of Porto Santo.

The presidential candidate contacted several people and traders and did not mention the meeting with the ADN leader.

Miguel Pita explained that he intended to question the admiral about the reasons that made him change his mind, considering that in 2021 he stated that he would make a “terrible politician” and, therefore, asked that he be given a rope to hang himself if he decided to enter politics.

The regional leader of the ADN also intended to confront the candidate with the case of the crew of the NRP Mondengo, who refused to carry out a mission in Madeira in 2023, asking if he would treat the Portuguese in the same way, “judging them and publicly condemning them”.

Regarding this process, the Supreme Administrative Court released a ruling in early May dated April 30, in which it declared the unlawfulness of the sanctions applied by the Navy to the ship's military personnel following a failed mission in 2023, when Gouveia e Melo was the Chief of the Navy General Staff (CEMA).

The court dismissed the appeal of that military branch, which contested a previous decision by the Southern Central Administrative Court, which had already considered null and void the sanctions applied by the Navy for alleged insubordination to 11 soldiers, out of 13 accused — four sergeants and nine enlisted men.

The regional coordinator of the ADN also wanted to address Gouveia e Melo about the vaccination campaign against covid-19, considering that there are unvaccinated people, as he said was his case, who “remain alive and healthy”, unlike many who “believed and complied with the plan” led by him.

On Friday, the first day of his visit to the region, Henrique Gouveia e Melo met with the President of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, and visited the construction works of the new Central and University Hospital of Madeira.

“I came on this visit to get to know the region better, to talk about other topics that I didn’t talk about before when I was a Navy officer and to understand the problems that the regions have,” he said at the time.

Asked if he would like to have the support of the island's chief executive, Gouveia e Melo responded that he does not ask for “support from anyone in formal terms, nor support from institutions”, adding that what matters is the support of the Portuguese people.

The candidate will also be attending a dinner with supporters this Saturday at a restaurant in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, having visited this morning the Autonomous Natural Gas Unit of Socorridos, part of the Sousa Group, and the São Lázaro slipway in Funchal, where he learned about the projects developed by ARDITI — Regional Agency for the Development of Research, Technology and Innovation.
